What is the Schengen Information System (SIS)?
The Schengen Information System (SIS) is a vast database shared between the member states of the Schengen area. It allows authorities (police, gendarmerie, prefectures, customs, consulates) to exchange alerts concerning wanted persons or objects, in order to protect public safety, control immigration, and combat organized crime.
Who can be registered in the SIS?
A foreign national may be reported in the SIS in the following situations, among others:
- Prohibition of entry or stay in the Schengen area
- Decision on removal, expulsion, or OQTF
- Wanted for arrest or extradition
- Missing or vulnerable persons
- Persons subject to discreet checks or specific surveillance
Consequences of being registered in the SIS
Being registered in the SIS may result in:
- Refusal of a Schengen visa
- Refusal of a residence permit or naturalization
- Refusal of entry at European borders
- Enhanced checks or even arrest, depending on the nature of the alert
How can you check if you are registered in the SIS?
All foreign nationals have the right to know if their name appears in the SIS. There are two steps to this process:
Direct request to the Ministry of the Interior (France)
Send a request for access to your personal data by written mail to:

You must include:
- A copy of your passport or residence permit
- Full proof of your identity
- A clear written request for access to the SIS data concerning you
The Ministry must respond within two months.
Referral to the CNIL in the event of silence or refusal
If the Ministry does not respond within two months, or refuses to confirm the existence of a report, you can refer the matter to the CNIL:

You must include:
- A copy of your identity document
- A copy of your request to the Ministry (proof of dispatch or acknowledgment of receipt)
- Your postal address
The CNIL will then refer the matter directly to the competent authorities to verify the existence of a report and inform you of the outcome.
Your rights if you are registered in the SIS
If you are registered with the SIS, you can:
- Request the correction of inaccurate information
- Request the deletion of the alert if the decision is illegal, unjustified, or has expired
- Challenge the decision to ban you from staying or entering the country before the competent courts

The CNIL acts as an independent intermediary between you and the French authorities. It can:
- Check whether you are reported in the SIS
